Today’s Challenge for Air Balancing and Design Professionals:

Balancing HVAC systems for new construction or during retro-commissioning presents a myriad of challenges. Field measurements are recorded, equipment is adjusted, and then equipment is retested. Finally, a large quantity of field paperwork is brought back to the office, calculations are performed and information compiled into a presentable report.

Consulting and Design Engineers evaluating air balance reports for large projects with multiple fan systems have their own set of challenges because air balancing reports generated from spreadsheets may not always provide the documentation they need to easily determine if the system meets design tolerances and project specifications.

The Solution:

TABulator HVAC software is a database driven air balancing system capable of recording, calculating and reporting on a large quantity of interrelated values. With TABulator HVAC software, a laptop or tablet PC is used in the field or office to record pre-balance take-offs and all field measurements.

TABulator HVAC software organizes all data by project, then by fan, terminal box, and room. An intuitive program interface enables TABulator HVAC software users to jump between related forms easily, making recording information a snap, while keeping the data well organized.

To ensure the HVAC system meets design requirements and industry standards, TABulator HVAC software combines measurements from inlets and outlets to produce both room pressurization and fan performance reports that can be easily evaluated. This enables air balancing professionals to view the entire building and all fan systems as a whole and easily determine where excess capacity is throughout the building, allowing them to make informed decisions and make appropriate adjustments as they go.

Engineers can also use TABulator HVAC software to evaluate existing air balancing reports by entering the data into the system themselves to evaluate the measurements and easily identify outlets and rooms outside acceptable tolerance limits.

Advantages TABulator HVAC Software

Performs Analysis of Air Balance Results

On a large air balance project, there can be literally hundreds of pages of outlet measurements. In addition, it is extremely difficult and time consuming to find specific terminal boxes and/or outlets in the documentation that are outside specified air flow tolerances and that might need further attention or annotation.

With HVAC TABulator HVAC software, because all of the data resides in a single database, the computer can be used to search and display outlets, boxes, and/or rooms, for which test results are outside the specified tolerances very easily. Special deviation reports list only outlets for which air balancing test data deviated from the design criteria and quality control (QC) reports can be generated listing rooms for which test data result in deviations from design pressure relationship for the room.

Reduces Potential for Errors and Automates Report Preparation

Laborious air balancing data entry from hand written forms is eliminated, the math is correct, and the person recording the field data is the same person who is entering the data, so transcription errors are eliminated. Once HVAC air balancing field work is complete, users simply move to a reports menu and print the report they want with the click-of-a-mouse.

Reduces Time for Reporting on Duct Traverses

Duct velocity traverse measurements are entered as they are measured. Once the inside duct dimensions are entered, TABulator HVAC software will recommend the number of traverse points to read and the distance from the inside wall to position the probe for each measurement. The number of traverse points is totaled, the average velocity calculated, and the inferred air flow in CFM is automatically displayed. The data entry form can be easily printed for the final report.

Reduces Time for Outlet Data Entry and Provides Tolerance Alerts

Using the traditional paper-based or spreadsheet approach, field technicians often need to enter the same outlet data three different ways. With TABulator HVAC software, users can duplicate existing outlets with a single click. This means the field technician only has to enter air balancing data for a set of outlets once, and can then easily duplicate the information to create the whole set. Using the “Speed Build” feature, the outlets automatically number themselves as users push the ADD button.
Outlets having HVAC test results beyond acceptable tolerances are immediately highlighted and brought to the technician’s attention. Repetitive data for similar systems is easily copied from one equipment record to another.

Tabulator HVAC software builds the room table, terminal box table, and fan summaries automatically so there is no need to transpose subtotals from one sheet to another and Tabulator HVAC software updates all related summary reports automatically. Changes to the outlets are automatically filtered down to the various summary reports. A single set of entered data is used to generate a variety of different reports and subtotals.

Reduces Time for Room Reporting and Determines Room Pressurization

Once the outlets have been recorded with a room designation for each, the TABulator HVAC software will automatically build a room table, sum the supply, return and exhaust cfm with the net cfm room pressurization result being compared to the design pressurization intent. If users choose to enter the rooms length, width, and height, then the TABulator HVAC software will calculate the CFM/square foot and air changes per hour.

On a hospital, laboratory, or medical office building air balance project, different rooms all require different pressure relationships to one another. One criteria does not apply to all rooms. Adjusting the air flow, and reporting the results indicating the desired pressurization is a tedious and error prone process. The reports require cross tabulation between the outlet summaries from different fan systems, the room list, and the specification.

With TABulator HVAC software, the room pressurization results are displayed as users record the air outlet and inlet test data. The net air flow to a room is visible right at the time the air balancing measurements are recorded. Adjustments can be made immediately to accomplish the design objectives. Data is entered per outlet and reported dynamically by terminal box, branch duct, room, and fan system.

TABulator HVAC Software will revolutionize the way air balancing contractors perform their work and design professionals analyze air balance report measurements.
